About William
William Shelley completed his undergraduate studies at Furman University before earning a J.D. from the University of South Carolina - Columbia in 2020. He entered law school after a liberal arts education, a path that shaped his approach to legal problems. His time at USC grounded him in the doctrines that underpin civil practice and procedure.
After law school, Shelley joined Arnold & Smith PLLC as an associate lawyer. He arrived at the firm early in his career and has since taken on a variety of matters that reflect the demands of a regional practice. Day-to-day work has included drafting pleadings, conducting legal research, and representing clients in court and administrative settings. He has worked alongside more senior attorneys on complex litigation projects and handled routine litigation tasks independently.
Shelley is admitted to practice in North Carolina and South Carolina, and he is also admitted to the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina. Those admissions allow him to represent clients in both state and federal forums across the Carolinas. He holds current memberships in the North Carolina State Bar and the South Carolina Bar Association, which keep him connected to the profession and the rules that govern it.
Colleagues describe him as methodical. He prefers clear lines of analysis and careful preparation. In litigation matters he places emphasis on procedural precision. That approach has guided his courtroom appearances and his work on pretrial motions. On transactional matters he has assisted in reviewing contracts and advising clients on compliance and risk management, tasks that require attention to detail and steady judgment.
At Arnold & Smith PLLC, Shelley has contributed to the firm’s caseload across several practice areas. He balances time between research-heavy assignments and the more immediate demands of client meetings and court appearances. The firm environment has offered him exposure to a range of civil matters, including case strategy, discovery management, and negotiation.
Outside of formal casework, Shelley maintains his bar memberships and participates in professional education opportunities. He continues to develop practical skills that serve his clients and the litigation teams he joins. He is based at Arnold & Smith PLLC and currently handles matters in state and federal courts in North Carolina and South Carolina, focusing his practice on civil litigation and related transactional work.
