About Torris J.
Torris J. Butterfield earned his Juris Doctor from Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law in 1997. He entered the legal profession the same year by joining the State Bar of Georgia. His early legal education laid the groundwork for a practice that would span both state and federal forums.
After gaining admission to the bar in 1997, Butterfield became active in professional associations that align with courtroom practice. He joined the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers the year he was admitted and has maintained that membership continuously. He is also a member of the State Bar of Georgia and is listed in compliance with the Bar, with no disciplinary actions noted.
Butterfield extended his courtroom credentials to the federal level in the mid-2000s. He gained admission to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia in 2006 and to the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia in 2007. He also holds membership with the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Those admissions allow him to handle matters that move beyond state court, including federal litigation and appeals.
In 2004 he established a solo practice, operating as the Law Offices of Torris J. Butterfield. As the owner, he has run his office for more than two decades. The practice structure has allowed him to manage client matters directly and to appear personally in both trial and appellate settings. He has worked in state criminal matters as well as cases that require federal court appearances.
Colleagues and professional affiliations describe him as an experienced courtroom attorney who maintains a steady presence in Georgia’s legal community. His long-term memberships in organizations tied to criminal defense and federal courts reflect a career centered on litigation and advocacy. He has balanced casework with the administrative responsibilities that come with managing a small firm.
Today, Butterfield operates his law office in Georgia and continues to represent clients in state and federal courts. His practice concentrates on criminal defense and federal and state litigation, including trial and appellate work.
