About Thomas P.
Thomas P. Goranson earned his undergraduate degree in finance and management from Southern Methodist University in 1969. He stayed at SMU for law school and received his J.D. in 1971. Those years in Dallas shaped his early legal outlook and tied him to the region where he would spend his career.
Soon after law school he began practicing in Texas. Over decades he has maintained a practice that engages the state's family law system. He is licensed to practice in Texas and has built a steady presence in local courtrooms and bar groups.
Goranson is Board Certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. That certification marks a recognized level of experience and testing in the family law field in Texas. It has informed how he approaches cases involving the end of marriages and the allocation of parental and financial responsibilities.
His professional life has been shaped by both courtroom work and professional associations. He has been active in the American Bar Association and in local bar organizations including the Dallas Bar Association, Denton Bar Association and Collin County Bar Association. He has also participated in several Inns of Court. His memberships include the American Inns of Court and the William "Mac" Taylor Inns of Court. He served with the Annette Stewart Inns of Court during 2003 and 2004.
Outside the strictly legal organizations he has taken part in groups that emphasize practice skills and professional development. He is listed as a founding member and Education Vice President in one organization and has been involved with Toastmasters International Club Counselors #5918 as a founding member. Those roles reflect an interest in advocacy training and in helping other lawyers refine courtroom and speaking skills.
For much of his career he has been associated with Goranson Bain Ausley. He works on family law matters that commonly include divorces, child custody disputes and property division. His practice has combined trial work and efforts at negotiated settlement. He has represented clients in county courts and family courts across the region.
He continues to participate in bar groups and Inns of Court while maintaining a practice in family law. He currently practices family law at Goranson Bain Ausley.
