About Thomas J Leonard

Thomas J Leonard III earned his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College in 1974 and completed his legal studies at the University of New Hampshire School of Law, receiving his J.D. in 1979. Those years framed the start of a long career that has crossed private practice, municipal government and corporate counsel work. He stayed connected to New Hampshire through each phase of his professional life.

Fresh out of law school he joined Prunier & Leonard as a partner in 1979. That early partnership placed him squarely in private practice and set a pattern of alternating between law firm work and other professional roles. He handled matters that required both courtroom experience and client-side problem solving.

In 1982 he moved into municipal service in Nashua. He served as an alderman and briefly as interim mayor. Those elected and appointed duties added a layer of public administration to his resume. The experience gave him firsthand exposure to local government operations and the interplay between municipal policy and legal constraints.

In the mid-1990s Leonard shifted into an in-house capacity. By 1996 he held titles including chief operating officer, vice president and in-house counsel at Friel Business Enterprises. That period broadened his perspective on business operations, corporate governance and the legal issues that accompany commercial growth. He split time between executive responsibilities and legal oversight.

He returned to law firm practice later on. Records show him working as a lawyer at Welts, White & Fontaine, PC in 2011. Across decades he has maintained a practice that moves between transactional work and litigation, guided by practical concerns and business realities rather than academic theory alone.

Beyond his professional roles, Leonard has been active in community organizations. He serves on the executive committee of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua and participates on the Nashua Drug Court steering committee. He has held professional memberships since 1979 and remains engaged in several local initiatives.

Colleagues describe a lawyer who brings experience from government, corporate and private sectors to routine and complex matters. He has worked on governance questions, commercial disputes and client counseling that reflects years of exposure to different institutional settings. His career shows a pattern of moving where legal skills were needed and taking on roles that required practical decision making.

He practices law in New Hampshire and handles both litigation and transactional matters informed by decades in private practice and in-house counsel roles.
