About Tempe
Tempe Smith graduated from the University of Mary Washington in 2004 and earned her J.D. from the University of Alabama School of Law in 2010. Her legal education placed her in Alabama at a moment when the state’s trial bar was grappling with shifting federal and state procedural rules. She left law school equipped to practice across those lines and moved into the practical side of litigation work soon after.
Her resume lists membership in the Alabama State Bar beginning in 2010. By 2015 she was working at Hare, Wynn, Newell & Newton, LLP as a lawyer. Court admissions include the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama and state bars in Alabama and Tennessee. The combination of state and federal admissions means she handles matters that start in local courts and can carry into federal proceedings.
Smith has been active in bar organizations throughout her career. She holds membership in the Birmingham Bar Association and the American Bar Association. She is a member of the American Association for Justice and the Alabama Association for Justice, affiliations that connect trial lawyers across the region. Locally she has served on the Executive Committee of the Young Lawyers Section of the Birmingham Bar Association, a role that involves organizing events, mentoring newer attorneys, and helping coordinate continuing legal education programs.
Colleagues describe her as steady in the courtroom and practical at the negotiating table. Her time at Hare, Wynn, Newell & Newton has given her hands-on experience in managing client files, handling discovery, and preparing cases for trial. She has worked on matters that require attention to both procedural detail and client priorities. That mix of courtroom work and case preparation has shaped how she approaches each file.
Outside the office she participates in professional programming and bar activities. Her membership in national and state organizations keeps her connected to developments in litigation practice and trial procedure. The professional network also provides a resource for case strategy and peer review, which she uses when preparing for complex hearings.
She is based at Hare, Wynn, Newell & Newton, LLP and regularly appears in state and federal courts across Alabama and Tennessee. Her current practice concentrates on representing clients in state and federal courts in Alabama and Tennessee.
