About TaKeena M.

TaKeena M. Thompson is a lawyer who blends courtroom experience with work in mediation and community programs. She earned her J.D. from Indiana University Maurer School of Law in 2009 after completing a B.A. at Spelman College in 2000. Those two degrees anchor a career that moves between formal litigation and alternative dispute resolution.

After law school, Thompson gained admission to practice in Indiana and to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. She is listed as counsel at Cohen & Malad, LLP, where she has handled matters that require both litigation skills and practical negotiating. Her work at the firm has included representing clients in state courts and in federal filings where appropriate.

Thompson holds a certification as a Domestic Relations Mediator earned through her participation in her law school’s Family and Children Mediation Clinic. That credential informs much of her approach to family matters. It also underpins her participation in pro bono efforts through the Indianapolis Bar Association’s Pro Bono Family Law Program, where she volunteers time on family law matters for clients who otherwise might lack access to representation.

Community service is an important part of Thompson’s professional life. She serves on the board of Reach for Youth, Inc., and acts as a volunteer judge for its Teen Court Program. She is a mentor for the Starfish Initiative, and maintains memberships in both the Indianapolis Bar Association and the Marion County Bar Association. These roles connect her legal practice to local youth programs and legal volunteerism.

Colleagues and clients encounter a lawyer comfortable in negotiation and in court. Her mediator training gives her tools to narrow issues and explore settlement options, while her litigation practice keeps her prepared to pursue formal remedies when needed. She has balanced pro bono assignments with firm responsibilities, contributing time to lawyers’ volunteer efforts through the Indianapolis Bar Association.

Thompson’s professional path is marked by an emphasis on dispute resolution, community involvement, and active bar participation. She continues to practice at Cohen & Malad, LLP and remains involved in local legal and youth organizations. Her current practice centers on family law and dispute resolution.
