About Suzannah Kari
Suzannah Kari Sundby is a licensed attorney admitted to practice law in the State of California. She was admitted to the California State Bar in 1999. Her license is currently in active status. Ms. Sundby is a managing partner at Canady + Lortz LLP, a law firm specializing in intellectual property located in Washington, D.C. She has been practicing law for over 26 years, serving clients throughout the District of Columbia and California.
Ms. Sundby earned her Juris Doctor degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center, now known as the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law, in 1999. Prior to law school, she completed her undergraduate education at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 1994. During her time at Franklin Pierce Law Center, she also obtained a Master of Intellectual Property Law.
Ms. Sundby concentrates her practice in the areas of intellectual property law, with a focus on patent preparation and prosecution, licensing, opinion work, post-grant proceedings, strategic planning, and client counseling. She represents individuals and businesses in matters involving biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmaceuticals, microfluidics, diagnostics, medical devices, and nanotechnology. Her practice encompasses all stages of litigation, including initial case evaluation, discovery, mediation, settlement negotiations, and trial proceedings in both state and federal courts.
Throughout her career, Ms. Sundby has handled cases in the Superior Court of California for the County of Los Angeles, the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California, the United States District Court for the Southern District of California, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. She has also appeared before the California Court of Appeal on multiple occasions. Prior to founding her own firm, she worked as an associate at Smith, Gambrell & Russell LLP in Washington, D.C.
Ms. Sundby is an active member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), where she served as the Chair of the Biotechnology Committee for the 2013-2015 term. She is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy (ASGCT). She has been recognized as an Intellectual Property Life Sciences Star and has been listed on the Patent Strategy & Management Attorney of the Year – District of Columbia shortlists. Ms. Sundby is fluent in English and Spanish, allowing her to serve a diverse clientele effectively.
