About Steven

Steven Wieland built his legal foundation at Cornell College, where he earned a B.A. in sociology, political science and Spanish in 2006. He went on to receive his J.D. from the University of Iowa in 2009. While in law school he gained courtroom experience through a judicial externship with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa and spent a summer as an associate at Schiff Hardin LLP.

His early post-graduate years included a clerkship at the Idaho Supreme Court in 2009. That role gave him a front-row seat to appellate practice and the state’s judicial processes. In 2011 he joined Hawley Troxell Ennis & Hawley LLP as an associate, where he handled matters for private clients and learned the rhythms of firm practice.

In 2015 he became a partner at Mooney Wieland Smith & Rose PLLC. The move put him in a leadership role at a firm with a presence in Boise. His title reflects a progression from clerk and associate to firm leadership over the course of a decade.

Wieland has been active in bar work. He served on the executive board of the Idaho Bar Association’s International Law Section from 2010 to 2014. That stint on the board exposed him to cross-border issues and to the professional networks that surround international legal matters.

Colleagues describe him as thorough and steady in the courtroom. His background includes both state and federal court exposure, a path that started with his judicial externship and continued through his private practice. He has handled appellate matters stemming from his clerkship experience and contested matters encountered at the law firms where he worked.

He practices out of the firm’s Boise office and carries responsibilities that include case management, client counseling and courtroom work. His practice draws on years of courtroom work and on his service in bar governance. He currently practices in Boise at Mooney Wieland Smith & Rose PLLC, where his work includes litigation, appellate matters and questions arising under international law.
