About Mellisa

Mellisa Maxwell trained at the University of Idaho, earning a Bachelor of Science in Family Consumer Science and Textile Design in 2000. She returned to the same campus for law school and received her J.D. from the University of Idaho College of Law in 2009. Those two degrees anchor a career spent largely in Idaho.

After law school Maxwell built a practice grounded in the state where she studied. She is admitted to practice in Idaho. Her early years in the profession involved the routine work that keeps small firms and in-house departments running: drafting agreements, advising clients on compliance questions and handling everyday litigation tasks when they arose. She learned to read statutes closely and to write plainly. That practical grounding informs how she approaches more complex issues now.

Over time Maxwell added a specialized credential to her toolbox. She earned the CIPP/US certification from the International Association of Privacy Professionals. That credential indicates formal study in privacy law, data security standards and the regulatory environment governing personal information in the United States. It also suggests regular engagement with technical and policy developments that affect how organizations handle data.

Her work reflects that background. Colleagues describe her as methodical; clients note that her explanations are clear. She spends time translating technical concepts into plain language so nonlawyers can make informed decisions. Contracts, internal compliance policies, vendor relationships and incident response procedures are the kinds of matters that increasingly cross her desk. When rules change at the federal or state level, she tracks those changes and assesses what they mean for the people she advises.

Maxwell maintains membership in professional associations and participates in continuing education. Those activities feed into day-to-day practice and help keep her current on shifting legal and regulatory developments. She also mentors junior colleagues on practical drafting and on managing client expectations — the quieter parts of practice that matter in long-term client relationships.

As of 2026 Maxwell practices in Idaho and continues to use her CIPP/US credential in advising clients on privacy, data protection and related compliance matters. Her current practice concentrates on helping organizations understand and manage legal risks tied to information handling.
