About Steven

Steven Oberman earned his law degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law, receiving his J.D. in 1980. He moved from classroom to courtroom at a time when criminal defense practice in Tennessee was changing fast. The law degree set the foundation for a long career in trial work and courtroom advocacy.

He has spent decades in practice. Oberman serves as managing partner at Oberman & Rice, where he directs trial strategy and supervises a team of litigators. The firm handles criminal matters in Tennessee courts, and Oberman’s role combines casework with management responsibilities. He has overseen high-stakes DUI and criminal defense trials and guided more junior attorneys through courtroom procedures and trial preparation.

Oberman holds a DUI Defense Specialist certification from the Tennessee Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization and from The National College for DUI Defense. That credential reflects specialized training in driving-under-the-influence defense and related scientific and procedural issues. He has applied that expertise at arraignments, pretrial hearings, and full jury trials, often engaging with technical evidence such as blood-alcohol testing and field sobriety procedures.

Outside the office he maintains an active presence in professional circles. He serves as chairman of the DUI Committee for the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, a role that involves coordinating committee work and contributing to discussions about best practices in DUI defense. He regularly participates in meetings and committee activities that address developments in case law, evidence standards, and trial tactics. His peers know him through that committee work and through involvement in continuing legal education programs.

Over more than four decades in practice, Oberman has concentrated on criminal defense and DUI cases in Tennessee. He blends trial experience and focused certification to handle matters that range from routine hearings to contested trials. He currently practices at Oberman & Rice, handling DUI defense and related criminal matters in Tennessee.
