About Steve
Steve Miyares built his legal foundation in the classroom. He earned a B.S. in political science from Old Dominion University in 2000, then completed his J.D. at the University of Richmond School of Law in 2003. Those years of study set the stage for work that quickly moved from theory to the courtroom.
Fresh out of law school in 2003, Miyares joined the Norfolk Public Defender’s Office as an assistant public defender. He spent his early career representing clients who could not afford private counsel. That period offered frequent courtroom time and exposure to a wide range of criminal matters. It also shaped how he approached cases: practical, direct, and focused on results for individual clients.
In 2011 he left the public defender’s office and entered private practice as an owner and partner at Miyares & Knight, P.C. The partnership changed his daily perspective. He balanced trial work with the administrative duties of running a firm. Cases came from different parts of the community. The work demanded both litigation skills and client management.
Three years later he established his own shop. In 2014 he opened the Law Office of Steven Miyares as a sole practitioner. Running a one-lawyer office required him to handle everything from intake and case strategy to billing and court appearances. The move also allowed him to set his own priorities in how cases were managed and how clients were served.
Throughout his career he has maintained involvement with the legal community. He holds current membership in professional associations and participates in activities that keep him connected to peers. That engagement provides access to continuing education and local professional networks.
Miyares is licensed to practice in Virginia and has concentrated much of his work on criminal defense and trial litigation, drawing on earlier experience as a public defender. He takes on cases that require courtroom advocacy and individualized attention. He currently practices in Virginia, concentrating on criminal defense and trial representation.
