About Stephen Mathew
Stephen Mathew Whyte began his professional life anchored in business before turning to law. He earned an undergraduate degree in business administration–marketing from the University of Central Florida, later attended Stetson University College of Law where he received his J.D., and returned to Stetson for an MBA in 2004. Those academic steps shaped how he approaches cases: practical, methodical, and attentive to both detail and strategy.
He moved into public service immediately after law school, taking a role as an assistant state lawyer in 1998. That first courtroom work proved formative. He spent the next year as an associate at Dickinson & Gibbons, sharpening trial and litigation skills. By 2002 he was a partner at Lavely & Whyte, P.A., and in 2013 he became a shareholder at Kirk Pinkerton, P.A., where he remains today.
His admissions cover state and federal forums. He is licensed in Florida and admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, and the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida. He also holds certification in Criminal Trial Law from The Florida Bar, an acknowledgement of courtroom experience and training in criminal proceedings.
Whyte’s professional affiliations reflect a mix of legal, civic and firearms-related involvement. He is a life member and certified instructor of the National Rifle Association and volunteers for Friends of the NRA. He is a Glock certified armorer. Locally, he has been active in the Manatee County Bar Association and the Sarasota County Bar Association since joining Kirk Pinkerton, P.A. He serves in civic organizations including the Manatee County Chamber of Commerce and Tiger Bay of Manatee County.
Beyond law practice, Whyte has maintained long-term commitments to community groups. He has been involved with the Judge John M. Scheb American Inn of Court since the late 1990s, progressing through roles from pupil to master. He has coached and served on the board of the Manatee Area Youth Soccer Organization in various leadership roles since 2004. He has also been a member of St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church for decades and participated in Leadership Manatee during 2013–2014.
In court, Whyte’s background combines public-prosecutorial experience and private-practice representation. He handles trial work in state and federal venues and maintains an active role in matters that require appellate advocacy. He practices at Kirk Pinkerton, P.A., handling criminal defense and matters in federal and appellate courts.
