About Sonya

Sonya Tien built a legal path that crosses corporate law, litigation and intellectual property. She brings technical training in tax and privacy to her private practice. The trajectory is straightforward. The work is varied.

She earned a J.D. from Columbia Law School in 2011 after completing a B.S.B.A. in Business Administration at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2007. Those academic years preceded early courthouse experience and a stint in financial services that shaped her approach to transactional and litigation matters.

Her early résumé includes time at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP, where she served as a summer associate in 2010 and then as a corporate and litigation associate in 2011. In 2009 she interned in the chambers of U.S. Magistrate Judge George H. Lowe in the Northern District of New York. Before law school she worked as a financial services intern at Northwestern Financial Network.

In 2013 she opened Tien Law Office, PC and took on the role of principal. The firm handles a mix of corporate work, contract disputes, intellectual property counseling and regulatory matters. Cases can range from transactional negotiations to motions in federal court. Her practice reflects both courtroom experience and transactional training.

Tien has pursued extensive post-graduate coursework across several institutions. She holds study certificates in taxation of international transactions and federal taxation, corporate and pass-through entity taxation, and an intellectual property law specialization. She also completed programs in privacy law and HIPAA, patent and trademark law, anti-corruption and compliance, financing for startups, and music business foundations. Those courses complement hands-on practice in tech, entertainment and healthcare-related IP issues.

Her admissions include state bars in New York, California and North Carolina. She is also admitted to multiple federal courts: the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York; the Northern and Central Districts of California; the Eastern and Western Districts of North Carolina; the Federal Circuit; and the Ninth Circuit.

Tien maintains memberships in several professional organizations, including the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the State Bar of California, the New York State Bar, the North Carolina State Bar, the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association and the Sports Lawyers Association. She draws on that network for cross-jurisdictional matters and industry-specific issues.

She continues to lead Tien Law Office, PC, handling matters across corporate transactions, intellectual property, tax and regulatory compliance, and serving clients in entertainment, technology and healthcare-related businesses. Her current practice focuses on corporate and IP matters alongside tax and compliance issues.
