About Sonny T.

Sonny T. Tran trained first as an engineer and later turned to the law. He earned a B.S. in Civil and Construction Engineering from North Carolina State University in 2001 and completed his legal degree at Charlotte School of Law. That combination of technical and legal education shapes how he approaches problems and evaluates evidence.

Tran began his professional life amid design plans, site schedules and construction tolerances. Those early years in engineering exposed him to the practical realities of building projects. After law school he shifted into legal practice. Over time he added courtroom experience and federal filings to the toolbox he developed as an engineer-turned-lawyer.

He is admitted to practice in North Carolina and before the Federal Circuit. He maintains a membership in the Mecklenburg County Bar Association, where he has been listed as a member since 2014. Those memberships reflect an active engagement in local and federal practice arenas and an interest in staying current on rules and procedure that affect both trial and appellate work.

Colleagues describe Tran as methodical. He tends to break complex matters into smaller, verifiable pieces. That methodical approach suits cases that involve technical plans, construction disputes or regulatory issues tied to engineering specifications. He has handled filings that require clear presentation of technical facts alongside legal argument. For clients, that often means translating engineering detail into plain language that judges and opposing counsel can evaluate.

In the courtroom he focuses on clarity. He prepares exhibits and witness testimony so that technical matters do not obscure core legal points. Outside court he works on pleadings, motions and briefings designed to reflect technical realities without overwhelming the legal issues. His dual training in engineering and law informs how he frames legal strategies and evidentiary narratives.

Tran’s practice spans both state and federal matters. He has experience managing case preparation from initial intake through briefing and hearings. He handles document review, expert coordination and evidence presentation in matters where construction, contracts and technical standards are central. He continues to practice in North Carolina and in matters that reach the Federal Circuit, concentrating on cases that benefit from his combined engineering and legal background.

He currently practices law in North Carolina and accepts matters that require detailed examination of construction, engineering and related legal issues.
