About Sean
Sean Kohl took a winding route into the law. He earned a B.S. in Education from Bowling Green State University in 2005 and then a J.D., concentrating in litigation, from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School in 2010. Those credentials bookend a set of early jobs that touch both technical and educational fields.
Before and during law school Kohl worked in roles that exposed him to different industries. He was a laboratory technician in 2004 and later taught high school social studies in 2006. During law school he served as a legal intern for the Michigan Office of Financial and Insurance Regulation in 2008 and as a legal extern in 2009 at the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. He also worked as a landman in 2010, a role that introduced him to property and resource issues.
Kohl moved into in-house legal work after graduation, joining Chesapeake Energy as a lawyer in 2011. He then spent several years at a large regional firm, Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP, beginning in 2013. That position gave him experience on complex matters handled by established litigation teams. In 2017 he joined Doucet & Associates Co., LPA as an associate. Two years later he became a partner in the firm he now co-leads, Kohl & Cook Law Office LLC.
He is admitted to practice in Ohio and Pennsylvania and is authorized to appear in the United States District Court for both the Northern and Southern Districts of Ohio. Those admissions indicate a practice that engages state and federal procedures. He holds memberships in the State Bar of Pennsylvania, the Columbus Bar Association (2018–present) and the Central Ohio Association of Justice (2018–present).
Colleagues describe Kohl as a lawyer who brings practical experience from outside the courthouse into his legal work. His background as a landman and in-house counsel at an energy company inform cases that touch on property, contract and regulatory questions. Time spent at a large firm exposed him to multi-layered litigation and to client representation across industries.
Kohl practices from Kohl & Cook Law Office LLC, where he has been a partner since 2019. He continues to handle matters that arise in both state and federal courts and works with clients on litigation and related disputes.
