About Sean

Sean Goodwin built a career at the intersection of science and the law. He combines formal legal training with a background in chemistry. The result is a practice centered on intellectual property and patent work.

Goodwin earned an LL.M. in Intellectual Property and Technology Law from Washington University School of Law in 2012. He holds a J.D. from the University of Illinois Chicago School of Law, where he also completed a certificate in intellectual property law, and a B.S. in chemistry with an emphasis in biochemistry from Loyola University Chicago.

His professional path moved quickly into private practice. In 2010 he served as managing lawyer for Goodwin Legal Services, an early platform for handling patent matters and IP counseling for individual inventors and small businesses. That role placed him in the practical work of drafting patent applications, advising clients on portfolio strategy, and coordinating with patent agents and examiners.

In 2022 Goodwin took an of-counsel position at Lexern Law Group. The position broadened the range of matters he handled and brought larger-scale docket work and cross-firm collaboration into his practice. He is also a registered patent lawyer before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, a credential that authorizes him to prosecute patent applications and represent applicants before the USPTO.

Goodwin’s science training informs the technical side of his work. With a degree in chemistry and coursework in biochemistry, he is comfortable explaining complex technical concepts to patent examiners and preparing patent specifications that address both inventive detail and claim scope. He has experience preparing and prosecuting utility patent applications and providing opinions on patentability and freedom to operate.

He practices in Illinois and maintains his own practice under the name Sean Goodwin Legal Services. His time in firm roles and as of counsel has given him experience managing client relationships, supervising case workflows, and coordinating outside experts. He now combines those skills in a practice that handles patent prosecution, portfolio counseling, and related intellectual property matters.

He currently focuses his practice on patent prosecution and related IP counseling for clients working in chemistry, life sciences, and technology.
