About Rod

Rod Sylvester built his legal foundation at Troy University’s Montgomery campus, where he completed a Bachelor of Science in Economics in 1994. He went on to earn his Juris Doctor from the University of Alabama School of Law in 2000. Those years in school shaped his interest in courtroom work and public service.

He launched his own practice in 2001 and has operated as the principal attorney since then. Early in his career he took on public defense roles across small municipal courts. In 2005 he served as a public defender in Red Level, Gantt, Lockhart and River Falls municipal courts. A few years later, in 2011, he also served as a prosecuting lawyer in Lockhart Municipal Court. That mix of defense and prosecutorial experience gave him repeated exposure to the practical mechanics of municipal and criminal procedure in Alabama.

Sylvester’s professional involvements run broad. He joined the Alabama State Bar and the Covington County Bar Association in 2000. He became active in criminal defense circles through the Alabama Criminal Defense Lawyers Association beginning in 2007. He has been a member of the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives since 2008, and he participates in the Alabama State Bar Volunteer Lawyers Program. Local indigent defense groups have also included him among their members since 2011. These memberships reflect his ongoing participation in both local and national professional networks.

Day-to-day, his practice has covered the kinds of matters common to small-town generalists and criminal practitioners. His municipal court work required quick case assessment and frequent court appearances. When acting as public defender he handled arraignments, negotiated pleas and prepared for trials on relatively short notice. As a prosecutor he learned the other side of case presentation, including charge selection and courtroom strategy. Across roles he handled client interviews, motions practice and trial preparation.

Clients and colleagues describe him as steady in court and practical in the office. He balances courtroom work and client counseling, often moving between brief municipal dockets and more extended administrative or civil matters tied to Social Security claims. He continues to operate his practice under the name Rod Sylvester Lawyer at Law PC. His current practice centers on criminal defense, municipal court representation and Social Security claimant work.
