About John F. Jones
John F. Jones Jr. began his path to the law in California and Alabama. He earned an A.A. from Mira Costa College in 1980, a B.A. in history with a minor in English from the University of Alabama in 1983, and his J.D. from Thomas Goode Jones School of Law at Faulkner University in 1986. Those classroom years set the stage for a career that has crossed courtrooms and chambers across the state.
After law school, Jones moved into appellate work at the Alabama Supreme Court. Between 1987 and 1990 he served as a staff lawyer to three justices: A. Hugh Maddox in 1987, Richard L. Jones in 1989, and Kenneth F. Ingram in 1990. That period gave him an early look at judicial decision-making and the mechanics of state appellate practice.
In 1991 he launched Jones & Jones, P.C., and took on the role of president. The firm became his base while he continued to alternate between private practice and public service. In 1996 he served as a municipal judge in Florala, and two years later he took on the role of public defender for Andalusia Municipal Court. Those positions put him in front of municipal dockets from both the bench and the defense table.
Membership in professional organizations has been a steady thread through his career. He joined the Alabama State Bar in 1987 and has been active in the Covington County Bar Association and the Alabama Association for Justice since 1991. He has also held roles beyond practice, including a term on the Judicial Compensation Commission from 2007 to 2008 and a stint as president of the University of Alabama Alumni Association’s Covington County Chapter from 1993 to 1994. Since 2013 he has maintained membership in the Alabama Municipal Judges Association.
Colleagues describe Jones as a lawyer whose experience spans trial and appellate arenas. His resume reflects work as a staff lawyer at the state’s highest court, a municipal judge, a public defender and the head of a private firm. Those experiences intersect in everyday practice: courtroom procedure, appellate briefing and municipal law.
He is licensed to practice in Alabama and remains active in local bar and judicial circles. He currently practices at Jones & Jones, P.C., handling litigation in Alabama, municipal court representation and appellate matters.
