About Robert W. Hughes
Robert W. Hughes Jr. built his legal foundation at Georgia State University College of Law, earning a J.D. in 1992 after earlier studies at Florida State University, where he completed a B.S. in Hotel and Restaurant Administration with a minor in Finance in 1975. He began higher education at Darton College, receiving an A.A. in Business Administration in 1973. Those early choices—business and hospitality followed by law—shaped how he approaches client matters: practical, detail-oriented, and attentive to the everyday concerns people bring into a lawyer’s office.
Hughes entered private practice in the early 1990s. He was a partner in Hughes, Kaplan & Gravante in 1992 and later in Hughes & Kaplan in 1995. He established Hughes & Associates, P.C. in 2002 and reorganized the practice as Robert W. Hughes & Associates, P.C. in 2009, where he remains the owner. Over more than three decades he has handled matters that span probate, elder law, and related civil disputes. He has also been active in local bar and volunteer organizations since the start of his career.
Court admissions mark milestones in Hughes’s professional path. He became a member of the State Bar of Georgia in 1992 and was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Georgia and the Court of Appeals of Georgia in 1993. In 2006 he gained admission to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States. Those admissions accompany a long list of professional memberships, including the American Bar Association and the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association.
Hughes’s interest in issues affecting older adults is reflected in his long-term association with elder law peers. He joined the National Academy of Elder Law Lawyers in 2014 and continues that association. Since the early 1990s he has also been active in Gwinnett County bar groups, the Gwinnett Pro Bono Association, and the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation, where he has volunteered time and resources to community legal needs.
The office of Robert W. Hughes & Associates is located on the second floor of the BB&T Building. His practice continues to handle probate and elder law matters, along with civil litigation and estate-related issues, serving clients in Georgia and appearing in state and federal courts as required.
