About Robert

Robert Stolzberg graduated from Union College in 1967 with a B.A. in Political Science and East Asian Studies and earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School later that year, where he studied litigation and international law. He began his career in journalism as a reporter for The Washington Post before moving into legal practice. Those early years set a different rhythm for his work. He shifted from reporting facts to arguing them.

He joined the Legal Aid Society of New York as a staff lawyer in 1971. He then took on a series of public-interest roles, serving as a supervising attorney in 1975 for the Roxbury Defenders’ Prisoners’ Rights Project. The following year he opened a solo practice, operating as the Law Offices of Robert Stolzberg. In 1977 he accepted a position as Special Assistant Lawyer General for Massachusetts, returning to private practice afterward and maintaining a steady mix of public and private work throughout his career.

In the 1990s his practice took on an international dimension. In 1993 he became a partner and the managing partner of the Suzhou, China branch of Charmoy Stolzberg and Holian. That experience added cross-border work to a background already rooted in litigation and public defense. He later reasserted his solo practice identity, and in 2011 he is listed again as operating under the Law Offices of Robert Stolzberg.

His admissions include the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. Supreme Court, the First and Second Circuits, and the state bars of Massachusetts and California. He is certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. The combination of trial certification, federal and state admissions, and an early record of courtroom and public-service work describes a practice comfortable in both trial and appellate settings, and capable of handling tax and international components when they arise.

Across decades he has moved between public-service positions, solo practice, and partnership responsibilities abroad. He handled legal-aid work and prisoners’ rights litigation early on and later took on international partnership duties while keeping trial and appellate work in his repertoire. As of 2026 he practices under the Law Offices of Robert Stolzberg, handling litigation, appellate matters, and cases that involve federal tax and cross-border issues.
