About Robert Louis

Robert Louis Wegman started his professional path studying music. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Barton College in 1983 and later turned to the law, completing a Juris Doctor at New York Law School in 1996. Those two degrees anchor an unusual combination of talents: an early training in classroom discipline and performance, followed by formal legal education in New York.

After law school, Wegman entered military service as a JAG officer in the United States Coast Guard in 1996. That role placed him in military justice and administrative law settings early in his career. He worked on matters that required both courtroom advocacy and an understanding of service regulations. The Coast Guard posting gave him direct experience in the legal needs of military personnel and the federal processes that govern them.

By 1998 he had moved into federal civilian practice as a Special Assistant at the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia. In that capacity he handled prosecutions and assisted on federal litigation. The work offered exposure to grand jury practice, trial preparation, and the routines of a busy federal courthouse. It also reinforced his familiarity with prosecutorial procedure and interagency coordination.

Wegman is admitted to practice in Virginia, New York and New Jersey. Those admissions reflect the geographic breadth of his professional life. He has operated in both state and federal settings, representing or prosecuting matters that touch on local rules as well as federal statutes.

Across his career, his assignments have kept him close to military justice and federal litigation. He spent formative years inside the military legal system and then inside a U.S. Attorney’s Office. That combination informs the kinds of matters he handles and the courtroom experience he brings to them. He has worked on cases that require navigating procedural nuances in federal courts and understanding how military regulations intersect with civilian law.

Wegman maintains a practice that spans the jurisdictions where he is licensed. He continues to handle cases that draw on his background in military law and federal litigation. He currently practices law in Virginia, New York and New Jersey and focuses on matters involving military law and federal litigation.
