About Robert L.
Robert L. Flax trained as a constitutional law student and left law school in the late 1970s with a J.D. from the University of Richmond School of Law. He completed his studies in an era when constitutional debates were shaping much of the courtroom work that followed. That educational grounding has remained a thread through a long and steady legal career.
He is admitted to practice in Virginia and before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Over the years his work has taken him into both trial and appellate settings. He has handled matters that required courtroom presence as well as written appellate advocacy, and he continues to draw on the procedural and constitutional law training he received in law school.
Within organized bar work, Flax has taken on leadership responsibilities. He serves as chair of the Virginia State Bar’s Special Committee on Lawyer Referral. In that role he works with other lawyers and bar officials on the administration and oversight of the bar’s referral efforts. The committee addresses how the bar connects members of the public to lawyers and considers policies that affect those processes.
He also maintains an active involvement in the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association. That affiliation keeps him in contact with trial practitioners across the state. It provides a forum where litigation issues and professional concerns are discussed and debated among peers.
Colleagues describe Flax as deliberate in his approach to cases. He favors careful preparation and steady advocacy. He has navigated both state and federal court procedures, and he is familiar with the requirements of appellate filings in the Fourth Circuit. His practice reflects long-term engagement with litigation and client representation in Virginia’s courts.
Today he continues to practice in Virginia and remains involved in bar governance. He balances casework with committee duties and association activity. He is active in the professional community and continues to contribute to discussions about lawyer referral, bar services, and the administration of justice across state and federal forums. He currently focuses his practice on litigation and appellate matters in Virginia and before the Fourth Circuit.
