Born on July 14, 1941, in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, Robert was diagnosed with polio at the age of seven. After a year in the hospital, he recovered sufficiently to walk with crutches, a mobility aid he used throughout his life.

In his teenage years, he moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1959. He pursued higher education at the University of Southern Mississippi, earning a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1963. Following his undergraduate studies, he worked as a Certified Public Accountant before attending Emory University School of Law, where he obtained his Juris Doctor in 1969. Robert began his legal career in 1969 as an associate at Alston, Miller & Gaines, eventually becoming a partner. In 1978, he joined Bondurant, Miller, Hishon & Stephenson, continuing his practice in business and tax law. In 1985, he founded The Hishon Firm LLC, where he served as the lead attorney until his passing.

In addition to his private practice, Robert was dedicated to legal education, serving as an adjunct professor in taxation at Emory University and the University of Florida from 1974 to 2004. He co-authored "Tax Fraud and Money Laundering," a textbook used in his courses. Throughout his career, Robert was recognized for his expertise and contributions to the legal field. He was listed in "Best Lawyers in America" and "Super Lawyers" from 2004 to 2012. He was also a member of the Order of the Coif and honor societies including Omicron Delta Kappa, Phi Delta Phi, and Phi Eta Sigma. His professional affiliations included the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Georgia, the District of Columbia Bar, and the Atlanta Bar Association.

He was admitted to practice before the United States Tax Court and various appellate courts. Beyond his professional achievements, Robert was committed to community service. He served as a director and chairman of the Georgia Special Olympics, reflecting his dedication to public service and philanthropy. He was also known for his hospitality, generosity, and appreciation for wine and art. Robert was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Anderson Hishon, and survived by his partner, Nancy Arnold Barber, and several siblings. He passed away on September 15, 2024, from multiple medical complications.
