About Robert C.
Robert C. Bonsib began his legal career in the mid-1970s after completing law school. His trajectory moves from public service to private practice. He built steady experience in trial and appellate settings over decades of courtroom work.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Indiana University Bloomington in 1971. He received his Juris Doctor from The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law in 1974. Those formative years set the stage for a career in Maryland and federal courts.
He entered public service immediately after law school, joining the Office of the States Lawyer for Prince George’s County as an Assistant States Lawyer in 1974. He returned to county government as Deputy States Lawyer in 1987. Between those posts he served as an Assistant United States Lawyer in the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland beginning in 1983.
In 1990 he became a partner at MarcusBonsib LLC. That move marked a shift toward private practice while maintaining ties to public and appellate work. His practice has encompassed trial preparation, courtroom advocacy, and the filing of appeals in both state and federal courts.
His admissions reflect a broad appellate and trial reach. He is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the Court of Appeals of Maryland, the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, and the courts of the District of Columbia. These credentials support work on matters that move from trial courts to appellate review.
Outside courtroom calendars he has taken on roles that shape practice in Maryland. He has served on the Maryland Criminal Pattern Jury Instruction Committee since 1999 and sits on the Maryland Criminal Defense Lawyers Association board of directors, a post he first joined in 1990. He has also been a member of the Trial Courts Nominating Commission since 1988 and belongs to local and state bar associations.
Colleagues and opposing counsel have known him for steady courtroom presence and attention to appellate procedure. He combines years of trial experience with practice in appellate venues. He currently practices at MarcusBonsib LLC, handling criminal defense and appellate matters in Maryland and federal courts.
