About Rick
Rick Cofer built his legal foundation at the University of Texas at Austin, earning a B.A. in Government and History in 2004 before completing his J.D. there in 2007. He remained in Austin after law school and began a practice that moved between public service and private work.
He entered private practice in 2008. A year later he joined the Travis County Lawyer’s Office as an assistant county lawyer. That early public service experience returned in later years. In 2012 he served as an assistant district lawyer for Travis County. He again worked as an assistant county lawyer in 2016. Those roles placed him in court regularly and helped shape his courtroom work.
In 2018 he opened the Law Office of Rick Cofer, PLLC, taking on a range of criminal defense and trial matters in state and federal courts. Two years later he became a partner at Cofer & Connelly, PLLC. He also launched LBC Texas Ventures, LLC in 2020, a separate business endeavor. His career shows movement between prosecutorial and defense perspectives, and between solo practice and firm partnership.
Cofer is admitted to practice in Texas and in several federal courts. His admissions include the U.S. District Courts for the Western, Northern and Southern Districts of Texas, the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, the Fifth Circuit and both the Texas Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court. He holds a Texas Guardianship Certification from the State Bar of Texas and completed the Prosecutor Trial Skills Course through the Texas District & County Lawyers Association.
Professional associations fill much of his calendar outside of client work. He is a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation and a Fellow and member of the Board of Directors for the Austin Bar Foundation. He also maintains memberships in criminal defense and trial organizations, including the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, the Austin Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and the National College for DUI Defense. Local bar groups such as the Austin Bar Association, the Highland Lakes Bar Association and the Hays County Bar Association appear on his resume as well.
His background crosses public and private practice, prosecution and defense, and trial work in both state and federal systems. He currently practices at Cofer & Connelly, PLLC, handling criminal defense, guardianship matters and related trial work.
