About Rene E.B.

Rene E.B. Tywang built a career that moves between public service and private practice. His path is steady and pragmatic: study, courtrooms, legal aid, public defense, and then his own practice.

Tywang earned his J.D. from the University of Baltimore School of Law in 2005. He also holds a B.B.A. in marketing from the University of Miami, completed in the early 1980s. Those academic steps came after a business education and before his decision to enter law. The sequence shaped an approach that combines attention to procedure with an eye for practical outcomes.

After law school he spent time clerking. In 2007 he served as a law clerk in the Office of the Public Defender. The following year he clerked for Master Theresa A. Furnari at the Circuit Court for Baltimore City. Those positions put him inside the court system during pivotal early-career years and exposed him to both trial practice and court procedure.

In 2009 Tywang worked as a staff lawyer in the Domestic Unit of the Legal Aid Bureau, Inc. That role involved family-related legal issues and representation for clients with limited means. He shifted between public and private roles over the next several years. In 2010 he formed Tywang Agencies, LLC. In 2011 he returned to public defense as an Assistant Public Defender in the Maryland Office of the Public Defender. He has balanced casework and organizational responsibilities throughout his career.

In 2014 he opened Tywang Law Group, LLC. The firm grew out of years spent in court and at legal services organizations. Tywang remains active in bar organizations. He has been a member of the Bar Association of Baltimore City since 2007, the Maryland State Bar since 2008, and the Maryland Criminal Defense Lawyers Association since 2011. He also holds membership in the Baltimore County Bar Association beginning in 2014. He is admitted to practice in Maryland and is admitted to appear before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Tywang is a certified mediator under Maryland Rule 17-106, a credential that adds an alternative to courtroom resolution. His background includes both criminal defense and domestic matters, reflecting his years at the Office of the Public Defender and the Legal Aid Bureau. He continues to run Tywang Law Group, LLC and handles cases that reflect that practical mix of public-service experience and private practice.
