About Cynthia
Cynthia Batchelder earned her J.D. from the University of Baltimore School of Law after beginning her studies there in 1992 and completing the degree in 1995. She attended law school in Baltimore and left with a professional credential that set the course for a career in both courtroom work and alternative dispute resolution. Those years shaped a pragmatic approach to practice.
After law school Batchelder moved into private practice. In 1999 she joined Hooper & Jacobs, LLC as a lawyer, where she handled matters typical of a busy private firm and developed the practical skills required for client representation and settlement work. Her time at Hooper & Jacobs exposed her to a range of legal tasks and the day-to-day demands of running cases.
Over time she shifted toward combining legal representation with mediation services. She established Batchelder Law and Mediation, LLC and built a practice that reflects that dual role. The firm’s name signals the mix of services she now provides: legal counsel and formal mediation sessions conducted outside the courtroom.
Those roles require different habits. As an attorney she prepares cases, drafts documents and advocates for a client’s position. As a mediator she manages conversations between parties, helping them move past deadlock. She has continued to use both sets of skills in private practice, alternating between representation and neutral facilitation depending on what the situation calls for.
Colleagues describe her work as practical and straightforward. She tends to pursue negotiated settlements when they will serve a client’s interests. At the same time she prepares cases as if they could reach trial, so that clients are positioned to make informed decisions about settlement versus litigation. That combination often shortens dispute timelines and limits expense, and it reflects a preference for resolving matters efficiently.
Since earning her law degree in 1995, Batchelder has practiced law for more than 30 years. She maintains her office at Batchelder Law and Mediation, LLC, where she provides both mediation services and legal representation to individuals and organizations. Her current practice handles mediation and client representation.
