About R. Steven
R. Steven Baker combines clinical experience and legal training in a career that spans medicine, the military and litigation. He earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of North Alabama in 1987, then completed a Juris Doctor at Birmingham School of Law in 1995. Before law school he built a practical nursing resume. He also served in the United States Army where he worked as a combat medic and medical sergeant beginning in 1978.
His professional path moved between nursing and law. He worked as an RN and house supervisor in the emergency department at Shelby BMC in 1991. After law school he joined The Southern Law Group, PC as a senior partner and practiced as a lawyer who retains an active nursing credential. In 2010 he became a partner at Nursing Home Law Group, P.C., where he continues to work on matters that intersect health care and civil litigation.
Baker holds a registered nurse credential in the State of Alabama. That clinical background informs how he evaluates cases involving patient care and institutional practices. He is admitted to practice in Alabama and before several federal courts, including the Northern, Middle and Southern Divisions of the United States District Court, and the Seventh and Eleventh Circuits. Those admissions allow him to represent clients in both state and federal venues.
His memberships reflect the dual nature of his work. He maintains active membership in the Alabama State Bar Association and the Birmingham Bar Association. He is also part of the American Association for Justice and the Alabama Association for Justice, including the Nursing Home Litigation Group within the AAJ. Those associations connect him to peers who litigate health care, elder law and personal injury matters.
Colleagues and opposing counsel describe his perspective as shaped by hands-on patient care and courtroom experience. He brings clinical terminology into legal strategy and translates legal obligations into practical questions about care standards. That approach informs case preparation, witness interviews and expert coordination.
Over the years he has handled cases that require coordination among medical experts, regulators and facility administrators. He has experience addressing claims tied to nursing care, facility policies and standards of care in institutional settings. He currently practices at Nursing Home Law Group, P.C., where his work centers on litigation arising from nursing home and health care environments.
