About R. Seth
R. Seth Oakes practices law in Tennessee and appears in both state and federal courts. He earned his Juris Doctor from Lincoln Memorial University’s John J. Duncan, Jr. School of Law in 2013 after completing his studies there beginning in 2009. The law degree set the stage for a courtroom-centered career.
After law school he moved into active practice in Tennessee. Over time he gained admission to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee. Those admissions expanded the venues where he can represent clients and argue cases beyond the state level.
His work has included matters taken to trial and matters handled on appeal. He appears in hearings and trials and prepares appellate filings when cases proceed beyond the trial court. The thread through his work is courtroom advocacy and case management, with attention to the procedural demands of both state and federal systems.
Oakes maintains a private practice through Oakes Law Office, PLC. In that role he manages case intake, client counseling, and litigation strategy. He represents parties in contested proceedings and handles the filings and motions federal practice requires when a case is in the Eastern District of Tennessee. He also conducts work before state tribunals when matters are heard in Tennessee courts.
Colleagues and opposing counsel describe him as steady at the lectern and methodical in pretrial preparation. He combines courtroom time with the paperwork that litigation demands. Outside of court, he mentors staff at his office and oversees the administrative side of running a small firm. His current practice centers on litigation in Tennessee state courts and cases in the Eastern District of Tennessee.
