About Peter

Peter Smythe trained as a communicator before turning to law. He earned a B.A. in Communications from Oral Roberts University and completed his J.D. at Texas Tech University School of Law in 1990. Those years set the groundwork for a practice that has spanned state and federal courts.

He established his role in private practice early. In 1994 he became principal of Peter Smythe, P.C. Records also list him as principal of Smythe PC from 1994 through 2010. Over the years he has argued matters and filed briefs in Texas courts and in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

Smythe’s professional activity includes membership in the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. That affiliation places him among attorneys who handle criminal matters and who exchange techniques and trial strategies with colleagues around the country. He has been involved with the association in recent years and continues to participate in its programs.

Colleagues describe Smythe as a lawyer who approaches litigation methodically. He prepares written submissions, manages court appearances and conducts hearings across jurisdictions where he is admitted. His practice experience covers trial-level work in Texas and appellate work in the Fifth Circuit. He has navigated procedural and substantive questions typical of contested criminal and civil litigation in those forums.

He has balanced time in the courtroom with responsibilities running a small firm. Managing a practice has required client intake, case management and supervising support staff. Those daily tasks sit alongside motion practice and appellate brief writing. Smythe’s background in communications informs how he frames arguments and prepares witnesses for testimony.

Local filings and firm listings show Smythe operating under the Smythe PC and Peter Smythe, P.C. names. He has kept his practice rooted in Texas while handling appeals that reach the regional federal court. In recent years he has maintained his professional activity through the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and through ongoing court work.

As of 2026 he continues to represent clients in Texas and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, handling criminal defense matters and related litigation through his practice.
