Paul D. Bekman graduated from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law in 1971 after earning a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland - Baltimore in 1968. He entered the Maryland bar and built a career that spans several decades of courtroom work. His legal education and early years in practice set the stage for extensive involvement in trial litigation and bar leadership.
Bekman has practiced law at Bekman, Marder, Hopper, Malarkey & Perlin, L.L.C. for many years. He is listed as a lawyer at that firm and has handled civil cases across Maryland courts. He holds certification as a Civil Trial Specialist from the National Board of Trial Advocacy, a credential that indicates specialized training and experience in jury and bench trials.
Over the years he has been active in professional organizations. He is a current member of the Maryland State Bar and a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He has been involved with the American Board of Trial Advocates since 1992 and has served as president of its Maryland chapter. He became a fellow of the International Society of Barristers in 2001 and of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers in 2003.
Bekman’s record of bar leadership includes multiple presidencies. He served as president of the Maryland Trial Lawyers Association in 1986–1987 and as president of the Bar Association of Baltimore City in 1993–1994. He led the Maryland State Bar Association as president from 1997 to 1998. He has also served as president of the Maryland Bar Foundation.
His courtroom work spans a range of civil matters. The Civil Trial Specialist certification underscores a career centered on trial practice rather than appellate or transactional work. Colleagues and bar groups have engaged him in leadership roles precisely because of his trial experience and his long association with Maryland courts and civic legal institutions.
Today he remains active in the Maryland legal community and continues to practice at Bekman, Marder, Hopper, Malarkey & Perlin, L.L.C. His practice centers on trial litigation in Maryland.
