About Nicholas John

Nicholas John Tamsma blends a background in accounting with a legal education. He earned a B.B.A. in Accounting from the University of Texas at Austin in 2011 and completed his J.D. at The University of Texas School of Law in 2014. The combination of a numbers-driven undergraduate degree and three years of legal training frames much of his work.

Early in his career Tamsma moved between financial and legal settings. The accounting degree informed his approach to statutory interpretation and case preparation. Law school gave him the doctrinal tools to turn financial facts into legal theories. His academic path left him comfortable with technical material and courtroom procedure alike.

Tamsma is admitted to practice in Texas and before the U.S. Tax Court. He is also admitted to the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Western Districts of Texas. Those admissions allow him to handle matters at both state and federal levels. In 2021 he is listed as an associate lawyer at Johnson, Christopher, Javore and Cochran, where he took on civil litigation and tax-related work.

Colleagues describe him as methodical. He favors clear organization over flourish. That shows in how he prepares pleadings and handles discovery. He aims to make complex financial records understandable to judges and opposing counsel. He does not rely on sweeping rhetoric. Instead he builds cases on documents, deposition testimony and statutory language.

Tamsma has worked on matters that require coordination between tax rules and federal procedure. He has experience responding to audits and preparing filings for court review. He also handles civil litigation that touches on tax issues, including disputes that move from administrative processes into federal court. He tends to take a careful, transaction-oriented approach when resolving disputes.

Outside of filings and hearings he spends time refining arguments and checking the math. His training in accounting remains a practical asset when cases hinge on calculations or financial statements. He balances technical scrutiny with an eye for procedural strategy.

He currently practices at Johnson, Christopher, Javore & Cochran, representing clients in tax and federal court matters and handling related civil litigation.
