About Nicholas James

Nicholas James Shemik trained first as a finance student before turning to law. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, majoring in finance, from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 2011. He then continued his education at SMU Dedman School of Law, where he completed a J.D. in 2014.

After law school, Shemik moved into practice in New York. He joined Dietrich Law Office P.C. as an associate in 2014. That early post-graduate step placed him in a small-firm environment where he handled day-to-day legal work and client contacts. The role required him to adapt quickly to courtroom procedures, drafting, and case management. He remained connected to the local bar, joining the New York State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Erie County Bar Association in 2015.

Colleagues describe him as steady in routine legal tasks. He has spent his early career building practical skills rather than cultivating a public profile. He is not known for headline cases or published scholarship. Instead, his experience comes from client files and the procedural grind of civil practice at the firm level. That work often means preparing pleadings, attending hearings, and coordinating with experts and opposing counsel.

Shemik’s background in finance informs his approach to problem solving. The training he received in business administration gives him a fluency with numbers and documents that often appear in commercial and transactional matters. It is also useful when cases require careful review of financial records or when settlement calculations become central to resolution. He combines that quantitative literacy with the routine legal drafting that forms much of a small firm associate’s workload.

Outside the office, he maintains active membership in professional organizations that connect lawyers across New York and nationally. The bar association ties provide continuing legal education opportunities and a network of peers in Erie County and beyond. Those memberships suggest a practice that values staying current on procedural developments and professional standards.

Today he practices as an associate at Dietrich Law Office P.C. in New York. His work continues to center on client representation within the state’s legal system, grounded in litigation support, document handling, and the practical application of law to business-related matters.
