About Nelson Chris

Nelson Chris Maddox earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the College of Charleston, attending beginning in 2004 and completing his degree in 2008. He moved from that undergraduate foundation into legal training and practice. His early academic focus in political systems and civic institutions shaped his later interest in courtroom procedure and dispute resolution.

He is admitted to practice in South Carolina and before the Federal Circuit. That combination has allowed him to handle matters that arise at the state level and to engage in federal appellate proceedings. He also holds certification as a Circuit Court Mediator through the South Carolina Board of Arbitrator and Mediator Certification, a credential that complements his courtroom experience and often places him in roles where negotiated outcomes are sought alongside traditional litigation.

Maddox maintains memberships in professional organizations including the American Bar Association and Lawyers of Distinction, the latter since 2022. He has kept an active presence in legal circles and in forums where mediation and procedural practice are discussed. Those affiliations reflect a steady engagement with peers and the evolving practices that shape how cases progress from filing to resolution.

He practices at Sweetgrass Law Group, LLC. At the firm, he works on matters that arise in state courts and in forums that require federal filings. His mediation credential means he is frequently involved in settlement discussions and in helping parties explore alternatives to trial. He is comfortable appearing in circuit-level proceedings and in proceedings that implicate federal questions at the appellate level.

Colleagues and clients describe him as methodical in preparing cases and pragmatic in assessing risk. He balances courtroom advocacy with the practical demands of resolving disputes outside of trial when the facts and law allow. He continues to work at Sweetgrass Law Group, LLC, handling both litigation and mediation matters in South Carolina and in venues that require Federal Circuit admission.

He currently practices at Sweetgrass Law Group, LLC, handling state and federal matters and serving as a circuit court mediator.
