About Mr. Michael
Mr. Michael Smith is an attorney admitted in Georgia and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. He earned a B.A. in history from Erskine College in 1993 and a J.D. from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1996. Those years shaped the foundation of a practice that has centered on matters that affect families and older adults.
His legal career began with admission to the State Bar of Georgia in 1996. He has been a member of Smith Barid, LLC since 2006. Over the years he joined professional groups that align with the work he does: the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and ElderCounsel, both since 2011, and WealthCounsel since 2009. He has also been active in local professional organizations, holding membership in the Savannah Bar Association since 1997.
Beyond the bar, he has taken on roles in civic organizations. He joined the board of the Alzheimer’s Association of Coastal Georgia in 2013 and continues to serve. He was on the board of Savannah Rotary West from 2013 to 2014. Those involvements reflect a regular thread in his career: attention to issues of aging, incapacity and care that touch many families.
In practice he handles matters commonly associated with elder law and estate planning. That includes counseling on long-term care planning, incapacity planning and probate administration. He represents individuals, families and fiduciaries in planning and administrative work. His memberships in specialty groups give him access to resources and peer networks that inform the practical side of advice and document drafting.
Clients and colleagues see him most often on cases that require steady procedural work and careful attention to legal detail. He is admitted in Georgia and in the Eleventh Circuit and maintains his primary office through Smith Barid, LLC. His current practice concentrates on elder law, estate planning and probate matters.
