About Moses
Moses Mares trained first as an engineer before turning to the law. He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the California Institute of Technology, then completed a master’s in chemical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He later added a second master’s in electrical and computer engineering at the University of California, San Diego. He completed his legal education at Santa Clara University School of Law.
His early career followed a technical track. He worked as a senior associate engineer at IBM in the mid-1980s and later served as a program manager at Intel in 1990. Those roles preceded a move into law, where he joined Knobbe Martens Olson & Bear LLP as an associate in 1995 and then Baker & McKenzie LLP in 1997.
Over the next two decades Mares moved between in-house and law firm roles. He was senior corporate counsel at Siebel Systems beginning in 2000. In 2005 he became vice president of business development and licensing at Acacia Technologies. In 2010 he took on the role of vice president, information technology legal at Paramount Pictures Corporation, an in-house position that combined legal and technology issues. In 2018 he was listed as chief legal officer and chief operating officer at CLZ Health, Inc.
He has also spent time in teaching and alternative legal practice models. In 2020 he served as an adjunct professor of law at the University of LaVerne College of Law. The following year he is recorded as a senior lawyer at Axiom, a company that provides legal talent and consulting services to corporate clients.
Mares’s background bridges technical disciplines and corporate legal work. His engineering education and early technical employment inform work on licensing, business development, and information technology matters. Titles such as vice president of business development and licensing, and vice president of information technology legal, indicate experience in drafting and negotiating technology agreements, handling licensing portfolios, and advising on IT-related contractual risk.
In-house leadership roles broadened that base. As senior corporate counsel and later as chief legal officer and chief operating officer, he handled business-oriented legal issues that intersect with operations and compliance. His adjunct teaching role suggests engagement with the next generation of lawyers and an interest in legal education.
Public records place him in California jurisdiction. As of 2021 he served as a senior lawyer at Axiom. His current practice concentrates on technology transactions, intellectual property licensing, and corporate legal matters.
