About Michael W.

Michael W. Lee built a layered educational foundation before entering legal practice. He earned a B.A. in history at the Virginia Military Institute after attending from 1985 to 1988. He later returned to formal study at the University of Richmond, where he completed a J.D. between 1994 and 1996. In the late 2000s he added an MBA from the College of William and Mary, finishing that program around 2009.

Those degrees shaped the arc of his work. He is admitted to practice in Virginia and Colorado and is also admitted to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Over the years his career has included courtroom appearances, appellate filings, and counsel on matters that cross state lines. He has worked on cases that required handling both state law issues and federal appellate procedure.

His dual legal and business training informs how he approaches client problems. He moves between litigation tasks and transactional questions without losing sight of practical consequences. Some matters he handles require drafting pleadings and arguing motions. Others require reviewing contracts, assessing regulatory risk, or advising on business decisions. He tends to take an analytical approach, separating legal issues from commercial ones and then addressing how they interact.

Colleagues describe him as methodical in preparing for hearings and deliberate in evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of cases. That temperament has served him in appeals practice, where attention to record, precedent, and procedure matters. In trial work he relies on preparation and a clear presentation of facts. The MBA background gives him additional context when disputes turn on financial or organizational questions.

He maintains membership in professional associations and participates in bar activities on a current basis. That involvement keeps him connected to developments in the practice of law in the jurisdictions where he is licensed. It also provides regular contact with peers who handle complementary subjects such as corporate transactions, regulatory matters, and civil litigation.

Today he practices at Lee & Piracci, PLC. He handles matters that require both courtroom work and business judgment, and he represents clients in state and federal matters in Virginia and Colorado as well as in proceedings before the Fourth Circuit.
