About Michael R.
Michael R. Sices built his foundation in the humanities before turning to the law. He completed a bachelor’s degree in political science at Washington University in St. Louis in 1987. He then earned his J.D. from Valparaiso University in 1991. Those formative years combined coursework and practical training that steered him toward practice in multiple jurisdictions.
After law school he entered the practice of law and became admitted to the bars of Illinois, Texas and Missouri. Over time he has worked across the three states, handling matters that arise in both state and federal courts. That geographic range has shaped his understanding of differing procedural rules and local practice customs.
His professional affiliations include membership in the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, which he joined in 2008 and maintains. That association is a common professional home for lawyers who represent debtors in consumer bankruptcy proceedings. His membership signals sustained engagement with developments in bankruptcy law and consumer protection issues over the last decade and a half.
Sices’s work has centered on consumer bankruptcy matters and related litigation. He represents individuals and small businesses seeking relief under the bankruptcy code, and he handles adversary proceedings and contested matters that can follow a filing. In routine and contested settings he has argued motions, negotiated with creditors and appeared in hearings before bankruptcy judges. He has also navigated the interplay between bankruptcy and state-law claims where they intersect.
Colleagues describe him as methodical in preparation and direct in advocacy. He combines courtroom experience with attention to client counseling, helping people understand the choices bankruptcy presents and how those choices affect longer-term financial plans. Outside the courtroom he has kept current on statutory and rule changes through continuing legal education and membership circles.
He continues to practice law in the present day, representing clients in consumer bankruptcy cases and related litigation, and remains active in professional circles that track developments in bankruptcy practice.
