About Michael
Michael Elbert began his academic path in history at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he earned a B.A. in 1994. He continued his studies at St. John's University School of Law, completing his legal education and receiving a J.D. in 1997. Those years set the stage for a career that has moved between public service and private practice.
He entered public service soon after law school. In 1998 he served as an Assistant District Lawyer in Bronx County. That role placed him in courtrooms early and often. It also provided a foundation in trial work and court procedure that would inform his later practice.
By the early 2000s he had shifted to private practice. He worked as an associate at O'Connor, Redd, Gollihue & Sklarin, LLP in 2001 and then at the Law Offices of Thomas F. Liotti in 2002. He became a partner at Elbert & Elbert, LLP in 2004. Almost a decade later he joined Matera & Elbert, LLP as a partner in 2013. In 2014 he launched The Elbert Law Office, where he serves as lead lawyer.
Those career moves track a steady progression from prosecutorial work to leadership in small firm settings. They also reflect sustained involvement in criminal courts. He has been active in local bar organizations. Since 2004 he has been a member of the Suffolk County Bar Association. He has held a leadership role in the Nassau County Criminal Courts Bar Association and is listed as its immediate past president, a position he has maintained since 2009.
Elbert is admitted to practice in New York and in the Federal Circuit. His courtroom background and association roles suggest regular engagement with criminal matters and trial practice. He has handled cases at the county level and in federal proceedings, drawing on years of courtroom experience on both sides of the aisle.
Colleagues describe him as someone comfortable in court and in case preparation. He moves from arraignment dockets to complex hearings and trials. His practice has combined litigation skills developed as a prosecutor with strategic work undertaken in private defense and representation.
He continues to practice from The Elbert Law Office. He handles criminal matters in New York courts and represents clients in proceedings that extend into the Federal Circuit.
