Michael Carl Cohen is a licensed attorney admitted to practice law in the State of California. He was admitted to the California State Bar in 1972. His license is currently in active status. Mr. Cohen is a senior counsel at Blank Rome LLP, a full-service law firm located in Los Angeles, California. He has been practicing law for over fifty years, serving clients throughout the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area and surrounding counties in Southern California.
Mr. Cohen earned his Juris Doctor degree from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, where he graduated in 1972. Prior to law school, he completed his undergraduate education at the University of California, Los Angeles, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969. During his time at Loyola Law School, he was involved in various legal clinics and externships, gaining practical experience in the field of law.
Mr. Cohen concentrates his practice in the areas of tax law and tax controversy. He represents individuals and businesses in matters involving audits, administrative appeals, civil and criminal litigation, and other tax-related disputes. His practice encompasses all stages of litigation, including initial case evaluation, discovery, mediation, settlement negotiations, and trial proceedings in both state and federal courts.
Throughout his career, Mr. Cohen has handled cases in the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Court of Federal Claims. He has also appeared before the California State Courts on multiple occasions. Prior to joining Blank Rome LLP, he served as a trial attorney at the Office of Chief Counsel for the Internal Revenue Service, where he gained extensive experience in tax litigation and controversy matters.
Mr. Cohen is an active member of the State Bar of California and the Los Angeles County Bar Association. He served as the Chair of the Tax Section Procedure and Litigation Committee from 1995 to 1996. He has also been involved in various speaking engagements, including presenting on topics such as "Worker Classification Disputes" at the USC Tax Institute in 2017 and "Estate and Gift Tax Audits and Appeals" at the UCLA Tax Controversy Institute in 2016. Mr. Cohen is fluent in English, allowing him to serve the diverse communities of Los Angeles County effectively.
