About Melvin L. Sims
Melvin L. Sims III built his academic foundation at Amherst College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and economics in 1997. He spent time at the University of Fort Hare in 1996 on an interstudy program that broadened his perspective. He later attended Howard University School of Law and earned his Juris Doctor in 2002.
After law school, Sims established a practice in Illinois. He took on roles that intersected law, housing and real estate. In the late 2000s he moved into bar leadership. He served as a director for Region VII of the National Bar Association from 2009 to 2010, a role that put him in contact with lawyers across multiple states and issues.
Sims holds professional certifications that expand how he practices. He is a title agent for Chicago Title and Trust and is a Realtor with the Chicago Association of Realtors. Those credentials allow him to advise clients on transactions and title matters in ways that many attorneys cannot. They also shape how he approaches disputes that involve property, leases and closing problems.
His work is grounded in tenant and housing issues. He is based at Tenants Rights Group, where legal matters and real estate practice meet. He represents people in landlord-tenant disputes, assists clients confronting eviction or habitability concerns, and handles transactional questions that arise in housing. His combination of a law degree, title-agent certification and Realtor license gives him a cross-disciplinary view of these problems.
Colleagues and clients describe Sims as pragmatic. He tends to break complex matters into clear steps. He does not rely on jargon. Instead he explains options and consequences plainly. That approach serves both individuals facing immediate housing threats and parties working to close a deal.
Outside client work he has remained connected to professional networks that touch on civil rights, housing policy and bar association activity. He has used those connections to keep current on regional trends in housing law and to exchange practical solutions with other practitioners.
Sims continues to practice in Illinois and maintains his roles as a title agent and Realtor while handling landlord-tenant and related real estate matters at Tenants Rights Group. His current practice focuses on tenant rights, eviction defense and property-related transactional work.
