About Melissa L.

Melissa L. Padgett earned her juris doctor from Thomas Goode Jones School of Law at Faulkner University in 2014. She completed her undergraduate studies at Auburn University, graduating in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural business and economics. Those two degrees set a practical foundation for a career that has moved between private practice and court-appointed roles.

Fresh out of law school in 2014, Padgett opened a solo practice under the name Melissa L. Padgett Lawyer at Law, LLC. She handled the everyday tasks of a small practice: drafting pleadings, meeting clients, and appearing in court. The following year she joined Otts, Moore, Coale, Godwin, Stearns & Darby as an associate lawyer. In that role she broadened her courtroom experience and worked on matters that required close client contact and detailed preparation.

Padgett is licensed to practice in Alabama. She is also certified as a guardian ad litem in Juvenile Court. That certification places her in a distinct position in cases involving children. As a guardian ad litem she investigates family circumstances, prepares reports for judges, and makes recommendations aimed at protecting minors’ interests. The work calls for clear communication with courts, social services, and families, and it requires attention to both legal detail and practical realities.

Her career path has combined the autonomy of a solo practitioner with the resources of a larger firm. She has maintained ties to her own practice while working within the structure of Otts, Moore, Coale, Godwin, Stearns & Darby. That mix has given her exposure to courtroom procedure and client counseling across several types of proceedings. Colleagues and court personnel have relied on her for consistent, procedural work that supports judicial decisions in sensitive cases.

Padgett’s professional experience centers on matters that bring legal standards and family circumstances into direct contact. She is familiar with the procedural mechanics of juvenile court and the documentary work that accompanies guardianship assignments. Her approach tends to be methodical: gather facts, document findings, and present them clearly to the court. She continues to practice in Alabama, where her current work focuses on juvenile court matters and serving as a guardian ad litem.
