About Matthew

Matthew Smith graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2002 and earned his J.D. from American University Washington College of Law in 2005. He completed law school as the economy and legal landscape were shifting. Early on he chose to build courtroom experience rather than pursue a purely transactional path.

He was admitted to the bar in 2005 and began his legal career that year as an associate at Condo Kelly & Byrnes, P.C. Five years later he moved to Livesay & Myers, P.C. as an associate. In 2016 the firm elevated him to junior partner. Along the way he joined several professional organizations, including the Virginia State Bar in 2005, the American Bar Association and local bar associations in Arlington and Fairfax in 2006, and the American Society of Legal Advocates in 2014. He was a member of the Prince William County Bar Association from 2011 to 2015.

Smith is admitted to practice in Virginia and the District of Columbia. He also holds admissions in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Those credentials allow him to take matters beyond single-jurisdiction practice, handling proceedings at both the trial and appellate levels when cases require it.

Over the course of his career he has worked on matters that proceed in state courts and in federal forums. His day-to-day work reflects that mix: drafting filings, arguing motions, and preparing cases for trial or appeal. Colleagues describe him as methodical in litigation preparation and steady in court. He has remained active in bar groups and legal organizations, which he uses as forums for professional development and to stay current on procedural and substantive changes in the law.

He is based at Livesay & Myers, P.C., where he serves as a junior partner and continues to represent clients in state and federal litigation matters. He maintains his admissions and bar memberships and practices in both Virginia and the District of Columbia.
