About Matthew

Matthew Pavao came to law by way of the laboratory. He earned a B.S. in biology and zoology from the University of Massachusetts, then stayed in Boston to complete an M.A. in medical sciences and a Ph.D. in biochemistry at Boston University. After several years in scientific research he returned to school for a J.D. at Suffolk University Law School, pairing technical training with legal study.

His early career reflects that dual training. Pavao is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and is registered before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He has been a member of the Massachusetts State Bar since 2006. That combination of credentials led him into work that sits at the intersection of science and law.

As Special Counsel at Cooley Godward Kronish LLP, he has advised clients on patent matters and other intellectual property issues. His role has involved drafting and prosecuting patent applications, preparing technical analyses, and counseling clients on the clearance and protection of inventions. Colleagues describe his practice as one that draws on both bench science and legal strategy.

Pavao’s scientific background shapes how he approaches legal problems. Years spent in biochemical research inform his review of patent specifications, claim construction, and prior art analysis. He is able to read dense technical literature and translate it into the legal arguments and documents that patent offices and clients require. That skill set is particularly useful when matters require a close reading of scientific methodology or experimental detail.

Outside of casework, he maintains ties to the local legal community through his Massachusetts State Bar membership, which has been current since 2006. He also maintains his registration at the USPTO, which allows him to represent inventors and companies in federal patent matters. He practices at Cooley Godward Kronish LLP as Special Counsel.

He currently focuses his practice on intellectual property and patent-related matters, combining scientific training and legal practice to serve clients in those areas.
