About Matthew James
Matthew James Brigham is a licensed attorney admitted to practice law in the State of California. He was admitted to the California State Bar in 1997. His license is currently in active status. Mr. Brigham is of counsel at Cooley LLP, a law firm located in Palo Alto, California. He has been practicing law for over 28 years, serving clients throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.
Mr. Brigham earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Davis, School of Law in 1997. Prior to law school, he completed his undergraduate education at the University of California, San Diego, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1994. During his time at UC Davis, he developed a strong foundation in intellectual property law, which has been central to his legal career.
Mr. Brigham concentrates his practice in the areas of intellectual property litigation and trade secret counseling. He represents clients in complex disputes involving technologies such as wireless communications, integrated circuits, semiconductor processing, PC chipsets, and video game hardware and software. His practice encompasses all stages of litigation, including initial case evaluation, discovery, mediation, settlement negotiations, and trial proceedings in both state and federal courts.
Throughout his career, Mr. Brigham has handled cases in the U.S. District Courts for the Central, Eastern, Northern, and Southern Districts of California, as well as the Eastern District of Texas. He has also appeared before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the International Trade Commission (ITC). Prior to joining Cooley in 2003, he gained experience in patent office proceedings and represented clients in various arbitration and litigation matters.
Mr. Brigham is an active member of the State Bar of California. He has been recognized for his contributions to the field of intellectual property law, including being selected to Super Lawyers in 2009. He is fluent in English and has a working knowledge of Spanish, allowing him to serve a diverse clientele effectively.
