About Heidi Lyn
Heidi Lyn Keefe is a licensed attorney admitted to practice law in the State of California. She was admitted to the California State Bar in 1995. Her license is currently in active status. Ms. Keefe is a partner at Cooley LLP, a law firm specializing in intellectual property litigation, located in Palo Alto, California. She has been practicing law for over two decades, representing clients in complex patent litigation matters across various jurisdictions.
Ms. Keefe earned her Juris Doctor degree from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1995. Prior to law school, she completed her undergraduate education at Wellesley College, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1992. During her time at Santa Clara University, she developed a strong foundation in intellectual property law, which has been instrumental in her legal career.
Ms. Keefe concentrates her practice in the areas of intellectual property litigation, patent office litigation, and trade secret litigation. She represents clients in high-stakes patent trials before juries and judges, handling all stages of litigation, including initial case evaluation, discovery, mediation, settlement negotiations, and trial proceedings in both state and federal courts. Her technical background as a former astrophysicist enables her to understand a variety of technical disciplines, from software to medical devices, which is advantageous in complex patent cases.
Throughout her career, Ms. Keefe has handled over 260 patent cases, regularly leading Markman hearings and trials in district courts across the United States. She has represented clients before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), the Federal Circuit, and the International Trade Commission. Notably, she has handled more than 50 Federal Circuit patent appeals in recent years, the majority as appellee. Her clients include companies such as Absolute Software, Box, CoolIT Systems, Meta Platforms, Niantic, and Snap.
Ms. Keefe is an active member of the American Bar Association and the Silicon Valley Intellectual Property Law Association. She has been recognized for her contributions to the field, including being named to the Daily Journal's "Top IP Litigators" list in 2013 and to the "Top 250 Women in IP" list by Managing Intellectual Property in 2016. She is fluent in English and Spanish, allowing her to serve a diverse clientele effectively.
