About Matthew
Matthew Curtis traces a steady legal path that began with a liberal arts degree from the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor and a law degree from Detroit College of Law, earned in 1985. He entered the bar following his graduation and built a practice that spans state and federal work. His education grounded him in the fundamentals that would shape a long career in litigation and appellate matters.
He joined Sommers Schwartz P.C. early in his career and has served as a shareholder there since 1985. That long tenure has given him regular exposure to complex courtroom work and firm management. Over the years he has handled matters that required appearances in multiple forums, and he has developed a practice comfortable in both state and federal settings.
Curtis is admitted to practice before the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, and in Michigan state courts. Those admissions allow him to represent clients in tax disputes and in federal and state litigation. His courtroom experience includes trial and appellate proceedings, reflecting a readiness to handle procedural and substantive phases of cases.
Outside the courtroom he has been active in bar and professional organizations. He has served as president of the Hellenic Bar Association and maintains membership in the Michigan Association for Justice and the American Association for Justice. In 2008 he became a fellow of the Michigan State Bar Foundation. Those roles have kept him engaged with developments in civil practice and professional standards.
Colleagues describe him as steady in litigation and methodical in preparation. He has remained at Sommers Schwartz P.C. through changes in the legal market and the firm’s own evolution. That continuity has allowed him to cultivate long-term client relationships and mentor junior lawyers within the firm. He balances appellate briefs and trial calendars with internal responsibilities that come from being a long-serving shareholder.
He practices out of Sommers Schwartz P.C. and represents clients in state and federal courts, including the U.S. Tax Court and the Sixth Circuit. His current practice concentrates on litigation and tax matters in both state and federal forums.
