About Matthew

Matthew Burgess built his path to the law from classrooms rather than courtrooms at first. He studied English literature at The Citadel, then trained as a lawyer at Charleston School of Law. Those years shaped the way he writes and argues today.

After law school he gained experience at a regional firm. In 2013 he joined Coffey, Chandler & McKenzie, P.A. as an associate. That role exposed him to the day-to-day work of a practicing attorney — drafting motions, meeting clients and appearing in hearings. It was the practical education that often decides how an attorney operates in court and at the negotiating table.

Two years later he opened his own office. In 2015 he founded The Law Office of Matt Burgess, Ltd. Co., where he serves as the principal lawyer. Running a small firm required a different set of skills. He took on client intake, case management and the business tasks that firms seldom discuss. Those responsibilities shape how he allocates time and chooses representation strategies.

He is a member of the South Carolina Bar, admitted in 2013. That membership anchors his ability to practice in the state and places his work inside South Carolina’s procedural and ethical framework. His practice operates from a single office in the state and serves local clients who need hands-on counsel.

Colleagues describe Burgess as concise in court filings and direct in client meetings. He tends to favor clear writing and steady preparation over theatrical courtroom tactics. Clients can expect plain answers about risks, timelines and costs. His background in literature influences how he organizes arguments and tells a client’s story to a judge or opposing counsel.

Outside the office he maintains professional ties through the state bar. Those connections keep him current on rules, local procedures and continuing legal education. He balances the demands of running a firm against the need to stay current on law and procedure.

Today Matthew Burgess practices law in South Carolina from The Law Office of Matt Burgess, Ltd. Co., representing clients and managing the firm’s operations. His current practice focuses on serving individual and business clients in South Carolina.
