About Matt
Matt Mathews studied biology before turning to law. He earned a B.A. in Biology from the University of South Florida in 1981. Nearly a decade later he returned to school and received his J.D. from Florida State University College of Law in 1990.
He entered the legal profession after law school and has worked as a lawyer since. His career has involved the everyday work that keeps a law practice running: advising clients, preparing pleadings, managing discovery, and handling negotiations. He has experience across the practical tasks that lawyers perform, from drafting documents to appearing in court when matters require it.
Mathews’s approach to casework emphasizes careful analysis and clear communication. He builds factual records, tests legal theories, and helps clients understand options at each stage. He spends time on the details of investigation and document review, then assembles those pieces into a strategy for resolution. When disputes escalate, he prepares cases for litigation; when they do not, he arranges settlements or other resolutions.
Colleagues describe him as steady and methodical in handling files. He tends to break complex problems into manageable steps and explains them in straightforward language. That practical style guides how he interacts with opposing counsel, judges, and clients alike. It also shapes how he runs a calendar and prioritizes deadlines, which can be decisive in contested matters.
Outside the office he keeps ties to the legal community through continuing education and routine professional activity. He completed formal legal education at Florida State University in 1990 and maintains the routines that many practitioners follow to stay current as rules and procedures evolve. He currently practices law.
