About Mark

Mark Filip is an attorney whose path runs through some of the most prestigious halls of law. He earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1992 after completing undergraduate studies at the University of Oxford (B.A. in Jurisprudence, 1990) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (B.A. in Economics and History, 1988). Those degrees set a clear direction early in his career.

He began his post-law-school career on the federal bench. In 1992 he served as a law clerk to Judge Stephen F. Williams on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. The following year he clerked for Justice Antonin Scalia at the Supreme Court of the United States. Those back-to-back clerkships placed him at the center of appellate reasoning and constitutional debate during a formative period.

After his clerkships he moved into private practice and eventually into the ranks of major corporate law. He is a partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP, where he has worked on a range of matters for corporate clients and institutions. His career at the firm reflects an arc from appellate and clerkship work into high-stakes legal practice at one of the country’s large firms.

Filip is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Illinois. Records show membership in the District of Columbia Bar beginning in 1996 and membership in the Illinois State Bar listed as 1965 to present. He has maintained active bar memberships in those jurisdictions while practicing in both federal and private-sector roles.

Colleagues describe him as methodical across complex legal questions. His years on appellate benches and in firm practice have given him repeated exposure to procedural and strategic aspects of cases. He has moved between courtroom advocacy, brief writing, and client counseling, which has informed how he approaches matters at the partner level.

Outside of casework, his educational background—two bachelor’s degrees and a Harvard law degree—remains a touchstone. It is a record that underpins the technical and historical understanding he brings to legal issues. He currently practices as a partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP, maintaining a litigation and appellate practice.
